John Archer Thompson
The Flowers of the Pembrokeshire Coast and Beyond
A welcome return to the club which was very well supported . John, who is a coastal ecologist living locally , captivated the audience from the start with a fascinating tour of the stunning floral world that we, in Pembrokeshire, are lucky to have on our doorsteps.
John’s photography brought to life his journey through all the classes of the botanical world in Pembrokeshire. Starting with lichens, fungi and ferns then onto the more familiar flowers seen on cliff tops, woodland and sand dunes. He gave clear explanations of why a plant thrives in a particular place. Sunny, shady, boggy or dry there is a plant making it’s home. We were taken through the seasons from Wild Garlic and Bluebells in Spring, Campion & Thrift in Summer , Gorse and Knapweed in Autumn and Primroses and Violets in Winter. Something to be found on your walks through the year.
John is also well known for his stories of fables and myths, and there were so many associated with the floral world. Some were rather implausible but very comical and entertaining.
Explanations of the ecological aspects, medicinal uses , rarity and oddities were easily understood. John’s knowledge of all the latin names of the species was spectacular!
As always, John’s talk was interesting, filled with facts and photography to involve and fascinate.

Steven Clary - My Story & Drones
This was Steven Clary’s third visit to Tenby Camera Club and with a large audience, we were enthralled again. Steven’s style of presentation is pacy and engaging so the evening flew by almost as fast as one of his drones.
Steven is Carmarthen born but has travelled the world with his work as a photographer and film maker. He has covered, since attaining his degree in Film & Media at Trinity St.Davids, motor sports, surfing, base jumpers, snow boarding, skiing & mountain biking to name a few genres.
Several images were shown of some of these which were fantastic.
His expertise now is Drone photography and filmmaking. We were informed and enlightened to all the developments in this type of photography & video. It has moved apace in the technology both with camera quality, control and speed.
Steven went into detail describing the types of drone, what they look like, what they are useful for and costs.
DJI Drones were illustrated with the gradual improvements they had, from being a basic drone to a camera drone like the DJI Inspire series.
A super section of the talk was on FRV Drones. FPV stands for First Person View, meaning the pilot controls the drone while seeing a live video feed directly from an onboard camera through specialised video goggles .
These are faster and very agile drones with more control over throttle and angle of flight with top speeds.
We were shown the work that goes into producing advert campaigns with the final product shown for instance “Faster Always” Atomic skies in Austria 2024.
Of course accidents happen and Steven had a collection of mishaps and crashes which made members gasp !! It demonstrated clearly the skills which have to be acquired !
His recent work was talked about including the World RX Hong Kong 2023, World Rally Cross South Africa 2023, Formula E - Jeddah Saudi Arabia 2025, Loheac & Lydden Legend Car Racing 25/26, BMW 3 Series Areplog Sweden Winter testing of prototypes 2025 and finally MotoRapido Duceti /HMY 2026 Superbikes.
After many years of travelling for work Steven wants to do more local projects so watch out for this ! Keep on eye on his TicToc posts and enjoy his skills in photography.
An awesome talk full of facts, stories, laughter and skill.
Thank you Dave Bolton for arranging the visit and to everyone who helps with entrance fees (Colin Potter), refreshments and setting up ( & down ) in the hall.
A warm welcome to all the new members and visitors, we hope you enjoyed the evening.

Dave Norton "Inside my Head"
Tenby & District Camera Club, held its last presentation of the season which was by Dave Norton of Rhondda Camera Club, who gave us a presentation titled “Inside my Head”.
A wonderful insight into David’s style of work, how he produces the fantastic images that has won him many awards and accolades. His photos come from looking at life from a different angle especially with humour. He uses many different photos and merges them into a compelling montage. He was very inspirational with his knowledge and creativity, with all the components of the images coming from his vast library of images. These could be textures, people, places or buildings for instance . A very entertaining and stimulating talk, illustrated with prints and digital photographs.

Allan Lloyd “Variety is the Spice of Life”
There was another well attended evening to watch a very interesting presentation by Allan Lloyd . Allan who is
based in Chepstow is a regular speaker for us. This talk started with Allan’s experiences visiting Alaska .
Salmon spawning and the attracted Bears in the rivers and on waterfalls were superbly photographed. There
was other wildlife too, bald eagles for instance and some spectacular landscapes as well.
Allan is an enthusiastic and experienced Drone photographer and he spent time demonstrating how to fly a
drone and answered the many questions from that field.
Finally we were treated to Allan’s beautiful images taken over the years, of distant galaxies and stars. There
was an excellent explanation of the equipment used, what software is required and the best type of locations
to capture the Milky Way and much more beyond.
A fascinating presentation .

Rob Greenhill Nepal it’s people, mountains and culture.
There were 24 members to welcome Rob Greenhill ,who had travelled down from
Glamorgan and they were not disappointed with his excellent presentation.
Rob’s talk was based on his visits to Nepal, hiking through and up the Himalayas.
Rob ran through his packing schedule for the months trip, keeping his camera gear
simple and light .
Rob enthralled his audience with stunning landscapes of the mountains, glaciers
and valleys.
He took time to capture special images of local people and children in their
personal environments. Images of the huge weights of baggage carried by the
sherpas, the tea rooms , the precarious rope bridges , the cremation ceremonies,
the prayer flags and walls all made you feel the culture of this special country. The
Buddhist beliefs are special to the Nepalese and they retain their ancient culture
and traditions,
We were taken through the gateway to Everest, visiting areas like Namche Bazar,
Khunde and Khumjung, Island Peak ( with an elevation of 6189m ), Tengboche and
it’s Monastery . All very interesting and unique.
The hikes were rewarding experiencing the culture and warmth, tasting their
cuisine, and seeing the mountains from different angles. Care had to be taken to
acclimatise to the mountain heights and adjusting to lower oxygen levels. Rob had
to transported down to a lower elevation due to Acute Mountain Sickness at one
point .
The group of trekkers with Rob raised money for Parkinson’s Disease, so very
worthwhile to do .
Rob was warmly thanked for his enthusiastic and comprehensive presentation.

Dave Lewis
Welsh Photographic Federation. We are affiliated to the Federation and rely on this
national body for judges, photographic awards such as the AWPF etc., and a basic
coordinating role for some 39 South Wales Clubs. At the recent AGM they recognised our
very own superman Dave Lewis with the award of an Honorary Fellowship of the WPF.
He has supported photography in Wales over many years and from our point of view been
an invaluable link between Tenby and the WPF. Our success is of course down to our
members, particularly the quality of work produced but Dave Lewis’s contribution has very
much helped to keep our profile high at a national level. Congratulations Dave and our
sincere thanks for all you do.

She has twice been a finalist in British Wildlife Photography Awards; runner up in Scottish Nature Awards; Shortlisted in International Bird Photographer of the Year, and award winner in the SINWP Bird Photographer of the Year in conjunction with the RSPB. Her talk started in Norway with tales of low temperatures while observing unusual birdlife. The she moved to Svalbard with glaciers and icebergs, landscapes and wildlife strongly featured including Polar Bears & puffins.
Moving to the equator and Kenya, Monica showed us outstanding photographs, of cheetahs with cubs, lions, elephants, hyenas and giraffes and much more. Landscapes of remarkable sunsets too.
Travelling South we ventured to the Falklands to be shown the rich unique wildlife. Stunning close ups of elephant seals, Penguins dashing out of the sea, and a huge variety of bird life.
Monica managed with fabulous photographic work to inspire, educate and enlighten.
Just amazing!

Mick Brown - Greenland
Tenby & District Camera Club welcomed back Mick Brown to give another fascinating talk. Last year it was South Georgia but this time it was the turn of Greenland. Mick is a local Biologist and guide and he spent a year on Greenland.
Greenland is the world’s largest non-continental island, covered predominately by snow & ice. Most residents are Inuit, the population concentrated mainly on the South West coast. It is the least densely populated country in the world.
Mick’s talk covered many aspects of life on this unusual island from the people and their beliefs, to social issues and their attitude to the wildlife. Polar Bears, whales, seals and sea birds are both appreciated and abused, with differing behaviour towards them. Hunting and fishing for skins, food and tourism is prevalent. It has stunningly beautiful landscapes. Education and Health Care is good with generous support form Denmark.
Mick gave a comprehensive general view of life on Greenland including the good and the bad. Like all countries they try hard to improve but it has difficulties because of it’s location, isolation and cold extreme climate.
It was interesting to see social photography as well as wildlife and landscape, all coupled with interesting anecdotes, facts and figures.

Martyn Pincher was invited to be the judge of this popular competition, to critique the images and advise on how to improve them.
Martyn commented how he had enjoyed judging such quality work.
He always judges “cold” i.e assesses the image on the night. He had not seen the images before the evening, but was still able to give an excellent critique on every image, recommending further adjustments and cropping to improve the image.

Joe Houghton “Processing a night shoot” - A Zoom Presentation
Tenby & District Camera Club welcomed back Joe Houghton for a presentation via Zoom all the way from Dublin. Thirty Members enjoyed Joe’s presentation discussing Night time photography and the post processing of this genre in St Florence Village Hall.
Joe picked out a street scene taken in Dublin which when unedited looked flat and uninteresting. Using his preferred Lightroom software he illustrated the use of masks which allow you to be very precise on the use of tools. The before and after images were quite amazing.
Other techniques covered were HDR, light trails, bracketing, luminosity masks and all sorts of keyboard short cuts. The talk was recorded so members could rewatch the presentation and make notes and practice. Another bonus to being a member!
The use of Zoom is still in it’s early days for the club to use occasionally. It is super to be able to listen to & learn from a presenter who would be unable to visit Tenby in person.
